A comedic trio best known for a series of "digital shorts" aired on Saturday Night Live, the Lonely Island feature three of the show's writers, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone. Samberg, who would also end up an SNL cast member, originally met Schaffer and Taccone in Berkeley, California while attending junior high school. After graduating high school, the three went their separate ways. They reunited in 2001, formed the Lonely Island, and created sitcoms and sketch shows in hopes of landing a network deal. It didn't happen, but when they partnered with the Internet site Channel 101, their popularity took off. A faux hip-hop project called Incredibad followed, then the Fox network commissioned a sketch show called Awesometown from the crew, but it never made it past the pilot. After being hired by SNL, a 2005 digital short they created called Lazy Sunday became an online phenomenon. Featuring Samberg and fellow cast member Chris Parnell, Lazy Sunday would spawn the phrase "Mr. Pibb and Red Vines = Crazy Delicious" and be followed a year later by the equally popular short Dick in a Box starring Justin Timberlake. That same year they made a moderately successful jump to the big screen with the film Hot Rod. The year 2008 saw them take on the Euro-dance sound with a new short, J**z in My Pants. The track was made available as a digital download in order to promote the group's full-length debut. Once again titled Incredibad, the album was scheduled for an early 2009 release and featured guest stars like Timberlake, Norah Jones, and T-Pain. Timberlake would return for their sophomore release, Turtleneck & Chain. Beck, Snoop Dogg, and Rihanna would also land on the 2011 album, along with the power ballad king, Michael Bolton.

Born in Bristol, England, Jamie N Commons moved with his family to Chicago when he was six, and for the eight years or so he lived there, he fell heavily under the influence of the blues and Southern American roots music. He returned to England to study music in London at Goldsmiths in New Cross, finally emerging in his early twenties with a hoarse, gravel-laced voice that belied his years and a dark, Americanized Southern swamp gospel blues vision of songwriting that made him sound at times like a slightly gothic version of Tom Waits. The six-song, Alex da Kid-produced Rumble and Sway is his second EP, and although there aren't a lot of tracks on it, one can feel Commons drifting closer to his own unique sound, with several of these cuts benefiting from the use of horns and brass, extending Commons' vision into bigger, deeper territory. The opening track, "Rumble and Sway," is a classic, with the brass touches giving it depth and a forward push at just the right moments. The second track, "Wash Me in the Water," is equally as strong, with a huge Southern gospel feel. Then there's the odd, striking concluding track, the Rick Rubin-produced "The Preacher," which comes complete with a spoken word Internet-themed "promo" spot in the middle, a bold move that takes a song that sounds like it came from the century before and tosses it firmly into the 21st century. Commons is on his way somewhere, and if Rumble and Sway feels like a transitional affair, it also feels like a good transition, pointing to the possibility of a masterpiece just around the bend.

JEDWARD - POV

Eurovision vets Jedward were once again competing in the pop competition in 2012, right around the time their third album, Young Love, appeared in the summer. Despite its youthful title, Jedward exhibit some signs of maturity on this tight pop album although, to be fair, the slightly subdued tone could be due to the slightly tentative nature of producers Duck & Paddy and Trinity Music — Deekay and DBH also helm some cuts — or the band's creeping exhaustion. Jedward aren't quite men yet not quite boys, and the music is similarly caught between two worlds, touching on traditional Eurocheese and modern dance-pop. The best parts of Young Love arrive when all involved throw both of those concerns to the wayside and just make chewy bubblegum. Those are the cuts that stick — the opening "Waterline," the big-booted thump of "What’s Your Number," the Brit-pop skip of "All I Want Is You," the Farifisa-spiked beach pop of "A Girl Like You" - and they could have been given different arrangements in any era from surf to glam to Total Request Live and been hits. Of course, it would also have helped if Jedward were just slightly more charismatic - now that they're not ridiculous, they're settling for workmanlike, which means they can't rescue the bland product from its textureless self but they don't stand in the way of the really hooky, trashy, irresistible pop that peppers this album just enough to give it some spice. So call it a draw: at its best, Young Love has the best music Jedward have yet made but none of that is really their fault.
